Life on an island can be challenging, but incredibly rewarding! Here are some of the basics, just to get you started.
Our Roads
Our islands are not the place to speed! The speed limit is 15 MPH. Take it slow on the roads and bridges, and watch for humans and critters crossing. Our sand roads are suitable for slow-moving vehicles. Dirt bikes and ATVs destroy the sand base of our roads and are dangerous and illegal.
Beach Access For Property Owners
All property owners in the Palm Island Estates development have access to the beach through private beach easements numbered 1 through 13. Other developments on the island also have private beach access off of their private roads.
General Public Beach Access
The general public access is located at Don Pedro State Recreational Area and at three other public accesses: one near the Resort, one centrally located on Knight Island, and one centrally located on Don Pedro Island. Please respect beachfront property owners.
Golf Carts (The law changed in 2023. The age increased to 15 with a driver’s permit. See the Video for all requirements.)
With a driver’s permit, you can legally drive a golf cart on any of our roads at 15. All golf cart drivers must have an ID on them at all times. Remember, golf carts are forbidden on all beaches.
Dogs / Pets
Dogs must always be leashed, and “poop-scoop” laws are in effect here. Be considerate of your neighbors who are walking their dogs on leashes and who are exercising. Dogs not on leashes can be scary and cause owners who have their dogs on leashes to become unstable and fall. Consider your neighbors; they want their freedom, too.
On the beach, dogs must be under their owners’ control. You are responsible for your pet’s behavior. Please remember that not everyone can handle being jumped on or approached by strange animals that are not on a leash. Be considerate of others and pick up after your animals.
Fireworks & Fires
Fires are prohibited anywhere on our barrier islands without a permit. Fireworks disturb wildlife, create litter, and pollute the water. Fireworks are prohibited. Charlotte County Florida imposes a Burn Ban and Firework Ban. https://www.charlottecountyfl.gov/news/charlotte-county-imposes-burn-ban.stml
The burn ban will remain in effect until the Commission votes to lift it. For information, contact Ashley Turner or Ashley.Turner@CharlotteCountyFL.gov.
Mangroves
Mangrove trimming is allowed if they are less than 10 ft. in height. You may cut them to 6 ft without a permit. You can maintain mangroves at their present height if they have been previously trimmed. For mangroves higher than 10 ft., you must hire a professional trimmer. Take before and after photos to be on the safe side.
