Yesterday, Friday 3/8, our own Station 10 Firefighters Eddie Diaz and Don Morley joined firefighters around the country for the "Fill the Boot" campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This was the first time that Station 10 participated in the 65-year-old annual campaign.

Fire Station 10 Evaluation Report (view/download) Project Status Page on the Charlotte County Public Site Our present Fire Station on Gasparilla Way does not meet County Code and fire service requirements, so the County will be replacing it. The original plan was to put the new building on the existing location. However, this site has significant challenges and the County is evaluating alternative locations. A site evaluation report was prepared for the County and released on 02.19.19. This report is being reviewed and the BCC has scheduled a vote to finalize the site location at their April 9th meeting. The fire house project can be tracked at the Project Status Page on the Charlotte County Public Site. Travis Mortimer, Assistant County Administrator, advised us on 02.27.19 that County representatives will be arranging a Town Hall style meeting at the West County Annex on San Casa sometime in mid-March to address stakeholder questions and concerns. PIE will be sending an email notice as soon as the date/time has been set. Travis has requested that questions and concerns be forwarded to the County through one communication source. Candy Cohen has agreed to serve as administrative liaison on this subject. You can reach Candy at [email protected] or text her at 201-600-1083. PIE will be sending an e-mail giving the date and time of the Town Hall Meeting once the details are available. Important Links:
Fire Station 10 Evaluation Report (view/download) Project Status Page on the Charlotte County Public Site ![]() Fire Station 10 evaluation report (view/download) As we shared last week, our Fire Station on Gasparilla Way does not meet County Code and fire service requirements, so the County will be replacing it. The original plan was to put the new building on the existing location. However, this site has significant challenges and the County is evaluating alternative locations. A big thank you to the Board of County Commissioners for postponing the vote on the new firehouse location from their meeting on February 26th to the next regular BOCC meeting on March 12th which allows an adequate public comment period. The Fire Station 10 evaluation report outlining the original and two new site options has been uploaded to the PIE site. You may continue to follow the County’s progress at the Project Status Page on the Charlotte County Public Site. On this site, it is noted that the project is funded by the county-wide capital project fund, not through the MSBU contribution. For further information and to submit comments, please email the project manager, Gary Burdahl, at [email protected]. Comments are welcomed and should be submitted by March 5th. For further information, or contact Lou Ellen Wilson at [email protected] or Candy Cohen at [email protected]. ![]() ISLANDER CALL TO ACTION: You may not be aware of this, but our Fire Station on Gasparilla Way does not meet County Code and fire service requirements. Therefore, the County will be replacing the fire house. The original plan was to put the new building on the existing location. However, now the County is indicating that this site is not feasible and are looking to relocate. In last week's Barrier Islands Fire Service Advisory Board meeting, we learned of a consultant’s report outlining two new site options. The evaluation criteria and findings will be made public on February 19th. The Board of County Commissioners is reportedly planning to vote on the location at their upcoming BCC meeting just one week later on February 26th. One week is not much time to analyze the findings of this decision which impacts every island resident. We also want to understand to what extent, if any, related costs will be passed on to us through our MSBU. PIE is sharing this key information asking islanders to contact commissioners by phone, email and/or letter before the BCC pre-agenda meeting on February 21st and ask them to delay this vote. Please include in your letter or conversation these two requests:

Emergency Meeting - Declaration of Local Emergency for Red Tide 08/14/18 By Lou Ellen Wilson
Recap of Red Tide Meeting – July 27th Skip’s Marina, Englewood, Fl. “People for a Solution to the Pollution” Wild guestimate – approximately 250 people there. Was very well organized and participants were knowledgeable and attendees were orderly – was NOT political Education: Problem was not made in a day, will not be solved in a day and has many facets: a. Lake O pollution is caused by run-off of all the streams and rivers in the middle of the state from Ocala south thru Lake Kissimmee and into the Kissimmee River which was “ditched” in the 60’s into Lake O. This reduced the amount of natural filtering of water and sheet flow. b.Pollution caused by farming, large groves, phosphate mines, many, many new subdivisions, highways, etc. c.Portions of Lake O in the 30’s was diked to stop flooding in the northern portion of the Everglades which had been drained for commercial farming and sugar cane (this drainage reduced the area for natural filtering of water) d.The Charlotte Harbor Watershed area has been polluted- causes: Phosphate mines, at the headwaters, subdivisions building canals (over 153 miles) without thought of proper water flow, over fertilization of home lawns and the subsequent run off, state agriculture laws that maybe mean well but may not prove out scientifically, failing septic systems, and cut off of proper (natural) water flowstarting at the Gulf backing up all the rivers, streams, etc. e.Fact: Red tide has been here for a long time, first recorded back in the 1500s; however it has gotten worse because it is an algae that grows faster from “fertilizer” and polluted waters that are full of nitrogen, etc. Proposed Solutions: - not easy but have to START sometime, somewhere!! a. Reservoir south of Lake O – land has been purchased for the 1st phase and Fl. Legislature has allocated 50% of the cost, waiting on Congress to approve their 50% - take approximately 5 years to build b.In 2008 Governor Charlie Crist signed an option to purchase more acreage for additional reservoirs, but only a small portion has been acted upon. Many of the options run out in 2020.
a.Write a personal impact statement describing what you see/happenings (Pictures help) and send it to our local, state and federal officials. This is the last large deposit of phosphate in Florida. They are a billion $ company, so this was only the first round of a long fight, they need our support when Mosaic changes their request and applies again.
