Right of Way Hearing - Palm Island Estates

Charlotte County will discuss Don Pedro and Knight Island right of way encroachments during its Local Transportation Quarterly Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Charlotte County Administration Center, 18500 Murdock Circle, Commission Chambers, Room 119, in Port Charlotte. Residents will have an opportunity to provide public comment during the meeting’s public input period. Anyone wishing to speak must complete a speaker card, state their name and the agenda item they are addressing, and limit remarks to three minutes.

What Will Be Discussed?

County staff will present several possible approaches for addressing items located within County rights of way on Don Pedro and Knight Island.

The options being presented include:

Vacating certain rights of way
Creating an overlay district for bridgeless barrier islands
Amending the County’s right of way ordinance
Enforcing the existing right of way ordinance without changes

The County presentation also discusses several issues that could be addressed through future ordinance changes, including permits for items placed within rights of way, visibility requirements at intersections and driveways, prohibited structures or landscaping, clear zones along roadways, and parking areas near public beach access points.

The Board is expected to discuss these options and provide direction to County staff. Depending on that direction, staff may develop proposed ordinance or overlay district changes for future consideration, or the County may move forward with enforcement under the existing ordinance.
